Ten words that shaped our world. The Ten Commandments re-visited.
What we call the Ten Commandments the Hebrew Idiom calls the ten ‘words’. They are recorded in two places, in Exodus 20 when Moses receives the law on Mount Sinai, and in Deuteronomy 5, where the story of the Exodus is reprised in a book cast as ‘Moses’ last words.’
The commandments flesh out very practically the two great commandments from the Pentateuch referenced by Jesus as ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart’ and ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’.
The first four words are about loving God, the remainder look at relationships in society and are often seen as foundational for our justice system. Previous generations were very familiar with these words, inscribed in our Churches and learnt in our schools, but they have in recent years become less visible, though no less important as a baseline for our life and worship.
