June 17th 2018. Building tomorrow’s Church today: Leadership: Ephesians 4:11-13. An absolute priority in building tomorrow’s Church is the role of leadership. Bill Hybells says ‘When a leader gets better, everyone wins’. The Church in the UK is looking hard at leadership and recognising traditional models of leadership need to change. In fact perhaps these traditional models have contributed to the decline of the Church and we need to re-imagine the practice of leadership in the C21. The passage in Ephesians looks at some diverse leadership roles in the Church and how they are ‘gifts’ to the Church from the risen Jesus. Download Discussion notes

We live in a rapidly changing world. Historic churches however tend to value tradition and permanence. They can often be characterised as conservative institutions. The Church Jesus founded however was a dynamic movement that He was building in a way that meant it could take the offensive (‘and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against her’). In this series we look at some of the values of Church (values carry permanence) and some of the practices that are more flexible as we consider the challenges of the future. Woodlands Church gathers all kinds of people from across Bristol in the adventure of following Jesus. We are a broad mix of people from different generations and backgrounds who want to explore and grow in faith together.
We believe that we are all on a journey of discovery and faith. That it's helpful to do that in a community with other people. People who can not only support each other in that exploration but also in life's difficulties and celebrations.

Run the Great Bristol Half Marathon & raise money for Open Doors
Open Doors is a non-denominational mission supporting persecuted Christians in over 70 countries where Christianity is socially or legally discouraged or oppressed. They work with local partners to distribute Bibles and Christian literature, give discipleship training and provide practical support, such as emergency relief aid.
This year, in partnership with Woodles, we are looking for people to run the Great Bristol Half Marathon on Sun 23rd Sept. The city centre run has become a long-held tradition in the national running calendar. Over 10,000 runners every year make this a must do event with an atmosphere second to none.
Open Doors will give you a charity place so entry for the race is free. Runners must be a minimum age of 17 and willing to raise a minimum £250 as a fundraising target. To find out more email the Open Doors challenge events team challenge@opendoorsuk.org.

Mind The Gap
May 6th 2018. Generation Gap (Malachi 4:6) Teenagers were a twentieth century invention! But every age has recognised the generation gap, the gap between older and younger people around behaviour, beliefs, and culture, and a gap that seems to be widening in our rapidly changing 21st Century world. The Bible speaks of generations working together, ‘old men and young men seeing visions’. Malachi 4:6 says ‘He will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to the fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse’ Download Discussion notes
May 13th 2018. Generation Gap: Sexual Revolution (Matthew 19:1-12). There has been a sexual revolution in my lifetime. Over my 60 years of life there has been a sea change in behaviour and values. The accessibility of birth control, and the swinging sixties kick started that change. Homosexual acts were illegal when I was born; now it is illegal to discriminate against people on same sex grounds. More recently gender fluidity is becoming accepted, very young people have access to hard core sexual material on line, 42% of marriages end in divorce. I could go on, but things have definitely changed! It is easy to see how different generations can have very different pre-suppositions about sexual ethics and practice. Our challenge as Christians is not to be driven by culture (whether pro or anti our current values) but to find the heart of God and distinctives of His kingdom for our lives and lifestyles. The book of Acts documents the first Pentecost and the gift of the Spirit to enable the disciples to be witnesses (Acts 1:8).
